Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which advocates the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils, sought Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's intervention to ensure India's support for a resolution against Sri Lanka in a UN body next month.

VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, who represents Chidambaram constituency in the Lok Sabha, called on Gandhi at New Delhi and had a 45-minute discussion with him during which he submitted a memorandum to the Congress leader.

"I request you to take necessary steps to announce the support of the Indian government for the UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Council) resolution seeking international independent inquiry for the genocidal killings of Sri Lankan Tamils," he said in the memorandum which was released by his party here.

AIADMK and DMK have already appealed to the Centre to move a separate resolution against Sri Lanka for alleged war crimes.

The VCK leader also asked Gandhi to use his 'good office' to introduce and pass the Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act Amendment Bill in the current session of Parliament. (Source; Indian Express)
