The police security of all the Eastern Provincial Council (PC) members of the TMVP has been withdrawn and the TMVP leader Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan has fired a letter to the police chief seeking a clarification over the move.

The withdrawal of the security for the TMVP provincial councilors comes just days after the military security of Chandrakanthan, who is also the Eastern Province Chief Minister, was withdrawn by the government.

The government had later clarified that only police security will be provided for all parliamentarians and government officials except for a select few and that the removal of Mr. Chandrakanthan’s military security was not a targeted move. Mr. Chandrakanthan was later provided with police security.

However the TMVP says the latest move seems to be an act of “revenge” as the police security of only the TMVP members in the eastern provincial council has been removed while the police security of government members in the council remains.

TMVP leader Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan has written to IGP Mahinda Balasuriya seeking a clarification over the latest move and at least two police officers for each TMVP provincial councilor as security.

The TMVP is contesting the upcoming General Elections independently in the North and East and not with the government. The party however had said the move to contest independently will not hurt the relationship with the government.  (Daily Mirror online)
