Former Member of Parliament and entrepreneur Dr. Tilak Karunaratne has been appointed as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and he is expected to assume duties today, Daily Mirror online learns.

“Yes, I received the letter of appointment today (December 7) and I hope to assume duties tomorrow,” Dr. Karunaratne told Mirror Business to its inquiry.

Since the resignation of Indrani Sugathadasa last week as the Chairperson of the SEC, speculation was rife that Dr. Karunaratne would be appointed the new Chairman.

Dr. Karunaratne was a former Kalutara District Parliamentarian and the former Leader/General Secretary of Sihala Urumaya. He is also the Managing Director of chemical importer, Multiform Chemicals.

The SEC also recently advertised for a new Director General with the promotion of the former Director General Malik Cader to the Finance Ministry.
