The Terrorist Investigations Division (TID) is continuing investigating into the arrest of two customs officers early this week for releasing goods belonging to the LTTE in 2004 after it was found that the suspects had direct links with LTTE Chief Vellupillai Prabakaran

TID officials told Daily Mirror online that the two officers were involved in releasing containers from the Colombo Harbour belonging to the LTTE during the ceasefire period in 2004.

“Both the suspects have carried out directions directly from LTTE Chief Prabhakaran and LTTE Intelligence Chief Pottu Amman,” TID officials said.

Officials from the Customs Department told Daily Mirror online, that the said containers belonging to the LTTE had been released after all the necessary documents had been produced to the Customs Department in 2004.

Officials said that the containers had been directly transported to Jaffna during the ceasefire period.

“If the customs department gets the necessary documents, then we have to release the goods. It is not our responsibility to check where the goods are heading,” Customs Department Officials said.

Meanwhile according to media reports, the Defence Ministry said that a section of the customs had strongly opposed some of the security measures proposed by the government to stop the LTTE using the Colombo Harbour as a transit point. (Daily Mirror online)
