Three more arrested in tourist’s killing

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested three more suspects in connection with the killing of a British tourist at Medilla, Tangalle early Sunday morning.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that with these arrests, the number of suspects in custody is now seven. The CID took over the investigations from the Tangalle police following the incident.

The CID is now conducting investigations into arresting another ten suspects in connection with the incident. “We will arrest the rest of the suspects in the near future,” he said.

The T56 firearm used by the main suspect, the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman was recovered on Tuesday by the police. According to the police he had used the firearm at around 12 midnight to celebrate Christmas and had shot few rounds into the air.

The main suspect, Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandrapushpa surrendered to the police on Monday evening along with his driver. In the morning of the same day two others surrendered to the Tangalle police.

The Russian girl who was with the victim and injured in the clash was taken to a private hospital in Colombo from the Karapitiya Hospital to undergo further treatment. 

According to police, British national Kuram Shaikah Zaman (27) was killed when he intervened in a clash between two groups in the area at a hotel in Medilla, Tangalle. (Supun Dias)
