At least three youth were drowned and three were rescued in the Kosgoda seas where a group of 12 had been bathing this evening, police said.

They said the 12-member youth from the Matugama area, had gone on a picnic in two vans yesterday morning. They had first visited the Kande Viharaya in Alutgama and later gone to the sea at Mahapelana in Kosgoda.

While they were bathing at a location reportedly prohibited for swimming, six members of the group had suddenly shouted for help as they were unable to swim due to the rough seas.

However, three of them had managed to swim back ashore, while the other three had gone missing. Later Navy divers found the bodies of the three victims aged between 17 and 23.

The three who escaped were admitted to the Balapitiya hospital. By Janak de Silva -Udugama
