Three arrested for attacking SL monk

Three members of Naam Tamizhar Iyakkam were arrested by the Government Railway Police on Tuesday evening for allegedly attacking a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk at Central station on Monday.

Triplicane resident Misa Periyar Anban (33), Prabhakaran (24) from Kothavalchavadi and Saravana Prakash (29) from Thousand Lights were picked up from Periamet by a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police V Ponramu and Inspectors Srinivasan and Sekhar, the police said.

At 7.15 am on Monday, the trio allegedly attacked Lankan Buddhist monk WMK Bandara (33) when he alighted from the Tamil Nadu Express at the Chennai Central station.

They reportedly did so to express opposition to the visit of Lankans to Tamil Nadu, reasoning that they were also part of the genocide of Tamils in the island nation.

The accused were arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Bandara and subsequently remanded in judicial custody.

In a related development on Tuesday, the police provided security to two groups of Sri Lankan pilgrims, one with around 50 people and the another group comprising ariund 70 members, in the city.(Indian Express)
