Thirty-five hospitalized with food poisoning

Thirty-five persons were taken ill and were admitted to Ududumara Base Hospital after partaking in meals served to them when they participated in a ceremony held at the Ududumbara School ground, that followed the opening of the Kandy – Mahiyangana Road by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last Sunday.

A spokesman for the hospital said that many of those who were admitted had shown classic symptoms of food poisoning which was severe stomach aches and vomiting, but had been discharged after receiving treatment.

The Ududumbara police said that several of these patients had also been sent to the Meda Mahanuwara Hospital. The patients had allegedly fallen ill after partaking in the mid-day meal served to them during the ceremony.

Meanwhile Public Health Inspector Ududumbara, K.A. Abeyratne, confirmed that those who had been taken ill had been suffering from food poisoning but assured that the patients were all out of danger and that investigations to bring those responsible to book were continuing. (Ajith Gangoda )
