Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage today said he had rejected Thilanga Sumathipala’s nomination for the presidency of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as it violated the Sports Law.

The Minister further said that SLC had received three complaints of violations against Sumathipala. According to that the committee headed by the Secretary of Sports Ministry stated that Sumathipala had violated the Sports Law under Regulation 15. (1).

The committee also pointed out that Sumathipala and his wife were shareholders and directors of companies which imported sports equipment at the time of nomination.

The election of officials to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), scheduled for March 30, was postponed to April 16 following objections being filed against certain candidates who have handed over nominations for the top posts in the cricket board.

Sumathipala has been SLC president three times from 1997 to 2004 and had also contested for the position last year, but withdrew from the race, allowing Upali Dharmadasa to win the election uncontested. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
