A tense situation prevailed at the Moratuwa Municipal Council this morning when a group of people including Buddhist monks staged a protest when the Council’s Vice Chairman Sujith Pushpakumara attended a Council meeting on a Court order. He was remanded on charges of having been involved in the killing of a Buddhist monk.
Protesters prevented the vice chairman from coming out of the ‘Black Maria’. Police anti-riot squads were brought in to bring the situation under control.
The Moratuwa Egoda Uyana Sunandopanandaramaya chief incumbent was stabbed to death over a land dispute on February 3.
