The temperature in most of areas has decreased due to the North East Monsoon known as ‘Winter Monsoon’ the Department of Meteorology said today. The temperature in Colombo and Anurdhapura is down to 18 degrees, Jaffna 19 degrees and Nuwara Eliya 7.7 degrees.

Director General Meteorology G.B. Samarasinghe said that such cold weather was usual in the month of December. He said the cold was not felt during the past years because of a heat generating effect in the Bay of Bengal. Mr. Samarasinghe warned that the country should be prepared for a cold climate in the months of December and January now that the heat generating effect of the Bay of Bengal is no more. (YP)
