Education sector officials expressed their objection to the Higher Education Ministry’s decision of making leadership training in military camps compulsory for new University entrants, pointing out that a large number of students have lost their enthusiasm to enter national Universities as a result of the decision.

“The Higher Education Ministry has issued letters to all the students expecting University entrance stating that participation in the leadership training program is a compulsory qualification to enter university. A large number of parents as well as students have expressed their displeasure over having to undergo residential training at the military camps,” Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin told Daily Mirror.

Speaking further Mr. Stalin pointed out that the Higher Education ministry nor is the University Grants Commission (UGC), authorized to make the training program compulsory for students. (Lakna Paranamanna)
