Nursing officers’ strike to continue

The strike of nursing officers will continue tomorrow said Chairman of the Government Nursing Officers Association, Saman Rathnapriya.

However the nursing officers at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Borella, Castle Street Women’s Hospital, De Soysa Women’s Hospital and the Maharagama Cancer Hospital will not participate in the strike, he said.

 The strike will continue until the nurses’ demands are won he said adding that these nurses would still be available to provide their services in case of an emergency.

Even last Saturday (3) nurses were available for operations in many hospitals in various areas of the country he said. According to Ratnapriya nurses participated in 200 surgeries around the island although the strike was officially on.

Meanwhile The Public Service United Nurses Union headed by Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera, which joined the strike earlier, had decided to withdraw from it today.

The GNOA chairman said that the PSUNU’s withdrawal would not affect their strike.  (Sanath Desmond)
