Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunga’s lawyers in a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) called on the IGP to take immediate action against those alleged of attacking her vehicle and harassing her in Beruwala on December 26.

The letter while detailing the incident which took place while the former President and Hirunika Premachandra were at a gathering at China Fort in Beruwala, states that the Special Task Force Personnel and the Riot Squad provided protection to the unruly mob.

“We are instructed to state that Milfer Cafoor had inexplicably been given a security detail of six officers of the Special Task Force who were also present at the scene. The STF detail stood outside Marjans’ (Beruwala UC Chairman) gate with their weapons giving protection to the mob,” lawyers of the former President- Paul Ratnayake associates said.

The letter goes on to detail that the Riot Squad which was requested by the head  of Ms. Bandaranaike's security detail did nothing to prevent the unruly mob of about 75 persons attacking and intimidating the former president.

“At this point the head of our clients security division C.I Jagath Pushpakumara requested the ASP Beruwala Division for a Riot Squad which was sent immediately. They stood around and did nothing to control the mob,” the letter states.

Further the letter alleged that two vehicles of Ms. Bandaranaike were damaged after the mob hurled stones following the continuous intimidation.

The letter further states that the former President believes inaction of the Police was willful and apprehends that it was with the intent of causing her physical harm. (Hafeel Farisz)
