The police will strictly implement existing road rules under the police ordinance including parking restrictions near public places, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya said adding that the rules will also apply to the police.

“We have imposed new specific time periods that vehicles can park. During 7.30am to 9.30am vehicles will not be allowed to park vehicles in front of schools, restaurants, shops and public places. And also from 4.30pm to 6.30pm the same conditions will apply for drivers”, he said.

The traffic police will monitor them and boards will be erected in such places where parking vehicles affects road traffic. “But there will be certain places where vehicles will not be allowed to park at any time”, he said.

During the other times vehicles can be parked at any place but conditions will apply in order to ensure it does not hinder the smooth flow of road traffic. “Rules and regulations will strictly apply for the police as well”, IGP Balasuriya said.

“A new traffic plan will be implemented covering every city in the country to tackle traffic congestions. All these methods are implemented in a way that will benefit the general public,” IGP Balasuriya said.
