The Sri Lankan fishermen who were stranded due in their boats to strong winds in the Myanmar waters were safe, the Ministry of Fisheries has said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror the Director General of the Department Nimal Hettiarachchi said the Myanmar authority had permitted the fishermen to be anchored in their waters until weather conditions settled.

He said the Fisheries Department had informed the Myanmar government to provide whatever assistance to the fishermen.

“The fishermen are currently anchored their boats around 90 kilometres from the Myanmar coast and the Ministry is constantly communicating with them. They will return to Sri Lanka when the weather conditions improve,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.

At least 35 trawlers were caught in a storm in the seas off Myanmar and Bangladesh with the fishermen stranded due to the climate change on Tuesday. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
