A stall at the Nugegoda fair which was occupied by the Nugegoda Janatha Pola United Traders Association President Premadasa Vidanapathirana, had been forcibly removed by some goons while he had been pushed out of it.

Sources said he had lodged a complaint with the Mirihana Police and the police had assured that they would look into the matter.

UNP MP Dr. Harsha De Silva who joined the struggle of these hawkers against the political involvement in giving stalls said Vidanapathirana had been subjected to this treatment after he went public with colleagues about their plight. Mr. Vidanapathirana held a press conference on Wednesday where he charged that traders who held stalls at the Nugegoda Fair for decades have been pushed out of it.

They charged that some 25 hawkers who were carrying out business in the fair for decades have been pushed out form it by the police and some influential politicians

Dr. De Silva who joined in the news conference said a UPFA candidate contesting the Colombo Municipal Council and the police are the ones who decide as to whom the stalls should be given. (Yohan Perera)
