Stabbing of lecturer: Suspect recovering

The suspect, who is alleged to have stabbed the Open University Legal Studies Department Head on Wednesday, is recovering and conscious, Kalubowila Teaching Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Lionel Muhandiram said.

“This morning he opened his eyes and responded to a few commands. At the moment he still appears to be drowsy. We expect him to recover fully in the next few days,” he said.

Dr. Muhandiram said the suspect might have consumed a sedative but that the toxicology reports would reveal the exact consistency and nature of the drug.
Meanwhile, Colombo National Hospital Accident Service -Training Coordinator and Team Leader Pushpa Ramyani de Soysa said the Law Faculty Head Yasodara Kathirgamathamby is recovering swiftly.

Last Wednesday afternoon Shivagnanasundaram Surendrajith – a student of the Open University Legal Studies Department -- who is a doctor and a resident of Jaffna is alleged to have brutally stabbed Ms. Kathirgamathamby at the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty and soon after he was said to have consumed a handful of pills.
