Sri Lankan Tamil refugees being trafficked: India

The indian government said today Sri Lankan Tamil refugees are being trafficked on the pretext of sending them to Australia and more than 1,100 such persons have been intercepted by security forces.

"As per inputs provided by the state government of Tamil Nadu, there are reports that Sri Lankan Tamil refugees are being trafficked on the pretext of sending them to Australia," Minister of State for Home RPN Singh told Lok Sabha.

He said since 2010 and till date, 1,163 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees were intercepted along with 57 Indians while being trafficked and 41 cases were registered in this connection.

Singh said the Tamil Nadu government has asked all Commissioners of Police/SPs to take action against offenders besides taking other steps to check the menace. (PTI)
