Special traffic plan for Colombo Night Races

A special traffic plan will be implemented in the Colombo City when it is transformed into a race track for two days for the Colombo Night Races to be held tomorrow and on Sunday, the police said.

The race is planned to start from Lotus Road outside the Galadari Hotel. Then it will go through the Ceramic Junction, a left turn from the CTO Junction, Chatham Street, York Street and then towards the York Street-Bank Road Junction. From the junction, it turns right towards Janadhipathi Mawatha, NSA roundabout, Galle Face Centre Road and finally back to Lotus Road.

These roads will be closed tomorrow and on Sunday from 3.00 pm on both days until the races are over. Buses heading towards Colombo will have to turn from Kollupitiya and then proceed through Dharmapala Mawatha, Slave Island and turn left at the Technical Junction towards Pettah.

The qualifying races will be held today. According to the organisers the events are Formula McLarens 1300cc Carburetted, Formula McLarens 4 1300cc EFI, SLAS Homologated Cars SL-H (up to 1600cc), SL-GT (grand touring cars) up to 3500cc, SL-S Specials up to 1500cc, Group Super motor Open and Over 250cc Open – 4 stroke.

The roads were repaired to accommodate the cars and motorbikes which would participate in the racing events. Sand bags have also been laid along the race track spanning from Hotel Galadari to York Street and back to the starting point.

During race times, the police have given two time periods for people staying at hotels and at work places to leave or to enter their premises.
The times are between 7.00 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. and 9.15 p.m. and 9.45 p.m., the police said. (Supun Dias)
