The police have taken a number of steps to prevent accidents and robberies during the Christmas and New Year season.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that they will take more action against traffic offenders. “People who are speeding and driving after consuming alcohol will be dealt severely by law,” he said.

“Eight to 10 accidents take place daily in Sri Lanka due to these reasons. During this season a large number of people will be coming out of their houses to shop and do their marketing. Therefore these steps have being taken by the police to minimise the number of casualties,” he said.

By going further the police have also deployed extra policemen in civvies as well to detect and arrest persons who are picking pockets.

SP Rohana said that the public will also have to park their cars only in car parks. “If not the cars will be towed to nearby police stations,” he said. (Supun Dias)
