Special Sanga convention postponed

The ‘Mahasanga Convention’ called by the Mahanayakes of the four chapters in order to adopt a resolution to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the country, has been postponed indefinitely citing security reasons.

Mahanayakes of Mawatte Chapter Most Ven. Thibbatuwave Sri Siddhartha Sumangala thera and Asgiri Chapter Most. Ven. Udugama Sri Ratanapala Buddharakkitha thera said that they withheld their decision considering the security aspect of and Buddhist monks and devotees who are supposed to assemble in large numbers at Mahamaluwa of Sri Dalanda Maligawa, under the present circumstances of the country.

 

However, Mahanayakes of Amarapura Chapter Most. Ven. Davuldena Gnanissara thera and Rammanna Chapter Most. Ven. Veveldeniye Medhalankara thera have not signed this statement.

 

The prelates of four chapters have been critical of the government’s move to arrest Gen. Sarath Fonseka. On several occasions, opposition politicians who support Gen. Fonseka called on the Mahanayakes and briefed them on the latest developments on the political front.
