Speaker request MPs to speak correctly

8 May 2012 10:01 pm

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa asks MPs not to speak in Parliament in the manner how members of death welfare societies speak at meetings.

The Speaker made this remark when Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva started casting aspersions at UNP MP Ajith P. Perera during question time.

At that time, Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando was answering the UNP MP who raised some questions about problems at co-operative societies.

Minister Silva who rose on his feet started passing various remarks.

The Speaker said that the UNP MP was asking some very good questions, and therefore, he should be given a patient hearing by the government.  Minister Silva remarked these questions were not worth a pittance.

Visibly annoyed by such remarks, MP Perera said that co-operative societies were irrelevant for drug deals, thuggary or tying up of a Samurdhi officer to a tree.

“These are relevant to the common people. That is why, I am asking these questions,” he said. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
