President Maithripala Sirisena said today some media institutions were attempting to make him disappear politically even though the new government had ensured media freedom by putting an end to the disappearances of journalists.

The President said the media should report the truth with criticism through discussion and wisdom.

He expressed these views at the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lanka Press Association held at the BMICH.

At the ceremony ten veteran journalists -- Yatiyana Pushpakumara, Sunil Madhawa Premathilake, Elmo Fernando, Ashoka Thilakaratne, Anula de Silva, Cyril Wimalasurendra, Sriya Ratnakara, S. Nadarajah Iyer, Dr. Lalitha Siribaddana and Chinthana Jayasena were felicitated.

Parliament Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake, Provincial Councils and Local Government Deputy Minister Karunaratne Paranawithane, Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) President K. Vikram Rao and Sri Lanka Press Association President Muditha Kariyakarawana also attended the ceremony. (Amila Priyankara)
