As heavy rains continued to lash the catchments areas yesterday, sluice gates of several reservoirs in the country were opened, officials said.

They said sluice gates of the Castlereagh, Laxapana, Wimalasurendra and Victoria reservoirs were opened due to the heavy rains. So far four gates of the Victoria and two sluice gates of the Laxapana have been opened.

The officials requested the public to remain alert due to the opening of these reservoirs.
Meanwhile, the Met Department warned that showers and thundershowers would be expected in the country during the day.

Colombo recorded the country’s highest rainfall figure of 116 mm during the past 24-hours.

In the meantime, the Railway Control room said Up-country trains would travel only from Colombo to Rambukkana due to large boulders falling on to the rail tracks between  Ehala Kotte and Rambukkana.
