Sluice gates of major tanks remain open

As many as 35 major tanks in the country have reached spill level while the sluice gates of 13 major tanks remained open, the Department of Irrigation said.

The Department of Irrigation Director Janaki Megastanne told the Daily Mirror online the sluice gates of Narchiduwa, Padaviya, Wahalkada,
Lunugamvehera, Veheragala, Buruthuwewa, Kavudulla, Minneriya, Kantale and a few others remained open today as well.

However, she said the gates would be closed tomorrow if the weather conditions improved.

The Sluice Gates of Rajangane Wewa which were opened a few days ago were closed today following a change in weather conditions.

In addition she said water levels in 71 major tanks had reached 94 per cent of their full capacity.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre said the road from the historical Somawathiya and Sungawilla was still closed as it was impassable. The Polonnaruwa - Batticloa Road which was closed due to inundation was opened today.(YP & AB)
