SLTB employees assured wage hike

SLTB workers called off a three day strike after Transport Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake gave a written assurance that the minimum wage of SLTB employees would be raised from Rs.8,030 to Rs.11,730 and their other demands would be met.

A tense situation prevailed at the Sri Lanka Transport Board Head office in Colombo today where hundreds of SLTB employees gathered around a conference room building where Dissanayake made the announcement during a media briefing.

The crowds yelled demanding the authorities to give an immediate response to their demands. At the media briefing Dissanayake assured in addition to employees wages increments which would be raised from the April 8, employees’ gratuity and EPF payments would also be made available before May 10.

Finance Ministry Secretary P.B Jayasundara said that Rs.150 million would be allocated for 15% employees’ allowances while another Rs.222 million had already been allocated for SLTB employees from April. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
