The High Command of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is expected to meet today afternoon to finalize if the party will support the government in the future, Deputy General Secretary of the SLMC Nizam Kariyappar said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online Kariyappar said that the meeting will take place at the party’s ‘Darrussalam’ Headquarters where the High Command will be briefed about President Mahinda Rajapakse’s recent discussion with SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem.

Accordingly a decision will be taken if the SLMC will support the government in the future, Kariyappar said.

“A request to support the President’s constitutional reforms has been made by President Rajapakse to our leader. Mr. Hakeem will also brief the High Command about his recent discussion with the President and accordingly a decision will be taken. Right now, there is no fixed agenda that we will support the government,” Kariyappar added.

A one on one discussion was held this week between Hakeem and President Rajapaksa in Kandy regarding proposed constitutional amendments.

He said that his party would not oppose any proposal that would not have any implication on the Muslim community. (Daily Mirror online)
