Slightly high number of accidents

Two hundred and twenty eight persons were treated at the Colombo National Hospital with injuries due to road traffic accidents, violence and fireworks till 8.00am today, the Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe told Daily Mirror online.

He added that there was a slight increase in accidents this year with only 203 persons admitted last year during December 31st 2009 and January 1st 2010 period.

The accidents and injuries relating to fire works was low this year with only 11 being reported, this is due to the constant public education regarding the dangers of fireworks when not properly used, Dr. Weerasinghe said.

Forty persons were treated at the Colombo National Hospital due to violence related incidents, 62 due to road traffic accidents and 11 due to firework mishaps during the New Year. (Daily Mirror online)
