Women in Sri Lanka do not like to travel in ‘women only’ buses and therefore moves to introduce such buses for their convenience had been shelved, Transport Minister Kumara Welgama told Parliament today.

He said the implementation of women only busses had been pushed to the backseat because of this reason.

Minister Welgama who was responding to an oral question raised by UNP MP Sajith Premadasa in Parliament said some women had personally informed that they did not want to travel in women only buses.

Mr. Welgama said his idea to provide special carriages for women in trains had to be given up because of the same reason. “I travelled by train recently and asked them whether they wanted special carriages for women in trains but they responded negatively insisting that they didn’t like to travel alone,” he said.
