Unconditional pardon for Uni. Student

The suspension and studentship cancellations imposed upon more than 200 undergraduates of the Sri Jayawardenapura University have been unconditionally revoked by the Vice Chancellor of the University today.

Class prohibitions imposed upon 189 undergraduates, studentship cancellations of 40 students and the lifetime cancellation of studentship declared upon five students had been revoked unconditionally in a letter issued to the undergraduates last afternoon which bore the signature of VC Dr.  N. L. A. Karunarathne.

The letter states the decision was effective Thursday July 3.

The university website announcing the decision states that the VC, together with the university administration, had revoked the disciplinary actions imposed upon the students in keeping with the “core teachings of Buddhism – the trilogy of Anithya, Dukkha and Anathma.”

However, the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) said it believed the decision was a result of the students’ relentless activism against the oppression carried out by the VC.

The undergraduates claimed that since they had realised the goals of their struggle, the students who occupied by the university administration building last week protesting against the alleged oppression of student activism in the university would leave the premises.

They also said their sathyagraha campaign that had presently exceeded 60 days would be called off. (Lakna Paranamanna)
