The government is to relocate over 60,000 low income families occupying very valuable land in the City of Colombo in a haphazard manner, Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa told reporters this afternoon.

Under the Government’s Urban Development Programme, the relocation of occupants in underserved settlements is a vital requirement, Yapa said.

He said that the Urban Development Authority has formulated a project proposal to develop such valuable lands in stages, to improve the living standard of the low income communities of the City.

Accordingly, cabinet approval was granted to the proposal made by the Ministry of Defence for the issuance of UDA Debentures to collect a sum of Rs.5 billion in the first instance, for these development activities in Colombo and adjoining urban areas. (S.A.J)
