Separate court to hear Bhikkhu's cases: DM

9 December 2011 03:15 pm

A separate court will be established to hear the legal cases of Bhikkhus very soon, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said in Parliament today. The Prime Minister said that the bill drafted in this regard had been referred to the Cabinet at the moment.

He said that there are numerous court cases involving Buddhist monks, and as a result all these cases should be dispensed with as soon as possible.

Also, he stressed the need to clear the backlog of civil cases. For that, he said that even the government buildings should be concerted to makeshift court complexes if court houses could not be built immediately. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
