SC rejects asylum petition: SL not ratified UN convention

29 September 2014 12:05 pm

The Supreme Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation filed by six human rights activists seeking an interim order preventing the deportation of about 2,000 Pakistani and Afghan asylum seekers arrested by the immigration officials.

The Court observed that as the country had not ratified the UN Refugee Convention of 1951, Sri Lanka need not abide by the conventions governing refugees and asylum seekers. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
