The cabinet has granted approval to sell sea sand in the Kirinda harbor to the Maldives, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau told Daily Mirror online.

The Director of the bureau, Dr. N P Wijayananda said the sand which will be sold was that which had washed ashore after the construction of the Kirinda harbor.

The Fisheries ministry had submitted a paper to the cabinet to seek approval to sell the sea sand to a foreign country as there is no local demand, as the sand is too soft.

However, the Director expressed his concerns in transporting the sand to the Maldives as ships cannot enter the harbor.  (Daily Mirror online)
