The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) is trying to ensure a safe passage for the Lankan expatriates in Egypt, SLFEB additional General Manager N.K. Ruhunage said.

“We are trying to secure a safe return for the expatriates and the Ministry has decided to stop Sri Lankans from migrating to Egypt given its current unrest,” Mr. Ruhunage said. According to him the Minister of Foreign Employment Dilan Perera had decided to stop people migrating for foreign employment to Egypt.

“Last year recorded 280 migrant workers to Egypt,” Mr. Ruhunage said. Most of the workers were female garment factory workers, the SLFEB is closely monitoring and observing the developments in Egypt while he cautioned the family members of the loved ones not to panic.

He added that the stoppage was a temporary measure and will be changed if the situation turned for the better. Meanwhile they are working with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Egypt who is in contact with the Sri Lankans in Egypt. (Sumaiya Rizvi)
