While claiming that investigations were underway into the complaint, by Hirunika Premachandra, the daughter of the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, of receiving her death threat, Police Headquarters said yesterday that security was being provided around the clock to her home in Cinnamon Gardens.

Issuing a statement detailing the current state of the inquiry into Hirunika’s compliant to the police, Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana said that, following the complaint on April 23, a special police team had been appointed (headed by ASP of the Colombo Crimes Division) by the Police Chief.

Although the police had tried to record a statement from Hirunika on April 26 and 27, they had been unable to meet her until April 28 at her house. However, Hirunika had told the police that she had nothing to add to her previous report.

On the next day, Sunday (29), police had also recorded the statement of a person who is said to have been the one who alerted Hirunika about the media reports about the death threat to her.

SP Ajith Rohana said that yesterday the police had also met the editor and a writer of a weekend newspaper, which had published the item about the death threats; but had told the police that they would only give their statements today, after consulting their lawyers.

He added that police would need statements from Hirunika and the editor and writer of the newspaper in the course of their inquiries.

However, the spokesman denied allegations by Hirunika and in some media reports that the police were not taking much interest in the case. He gave an assurance the police would go ahead with their inquiries and possibly make an arrest.
