Robbery was to pay back loan: Officer in Hijaab

Police said the Army Captain who had attempted to rob the Kandy Branch of the National Savings Bank disguised as a woman dressed in a Hijaab admitted that he had attempted to rob the bank of Rs.1 million because he had an outstanding loan of Rs.800,000, which he was unable to pay.

He said he had obtained loans from various people during the past few years. Police also found a letter he had written to the bank manager asking for a loan of Rs.1 million.

At the time of his arrest he was carrying a black toy pistol and a knife.

He was arrested after the security guards had informed the police after observing him acting in a suspicious behaviour.

Police said the Army Captain attached to a military installation in Kotmale was produced in the Kandy Magistrate’s Court today. (Supun Dias)
