9 June 2015 03:20 pm

The report of the three-member committee appointed to probe the 2012 Welikada prison riot was handed over to Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakshe today.

Minister Rajapakshe said culprits will soon be identified and legal action will be taken to punish them with the purpose of rendering justice to the killed inmates according to the recommendations and instructions given in the report.

The committee was comprised its Head High Court Judge Wimal Nambuwasam, Retired Deputy IGP Ashoka Wijethilake and Retired Administrative Officer and Lawyer S. K. Liyanage.

Minister Rajapakshe said statements from persons including eye witnessed prisoners had been recorded.

He said he will have to study the committee’s recommendations thoroughly before making decisions on next moves.

The new three member committee began investigation in early February 2015 after the Justice Minister said the previous committee appointed by the former government had tried to hide and cover-up the culprits. (Piyumi Fonseka)
