Relinquishing duties

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake will be allowed to relinquish his duties soon, the government informed Parliament today.

It was also revealed that he had officially retired from his post with effect from 28th January 2002 and was requested to remain in the post till the independent elections commission is set up under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution enacted in 2001.

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardene who revealed this matter in the House with regard to an oral question raised by UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekera, stated that the President will institute action in future to establish the Elections Commission constituted under the 18th Amendment.
