The CID today informed the Court that a decision regarding the suspect in the assassination of Lasantha Wickramatunga will be taken after consulting the Inspector General of Police

CID made this statement after the case was called for trial today.

The mobile phone of the former Sunday Leader Editor was stolen by the suspect Sugath Perera when Wickramathunga was being taken to the Kalubowila Hospital after his attack. Following the arrest of the suspect by the Mirihana Police the mobile phone was recovered from a trishaw driver who had purchased it for Rs. 6000.

The suspect was in remand custody for over a year, but the investigations had not revealed any information on his connection with the murder. Consequently on consultation with the IGP, the release of the suspect or some relief for him would be considered and investigations into the phone numbers would be continued, the CID asserted. (AW)
