It has been revealed that the stabbing incident relating to the Open University’s Legal Studies Department Head Ms. Yasodara Kadirgamathamby had come in retaliation of her refusal to accept the suspect’s assignment that was submitted late, Open University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vijitha Nanayakkara said.

Dr. Nanayakkara told Daily Mirror Online that the suspect had visited the university about three days before the incident and pleaded with the victimized lecturer to accept his assignment and added it was the  likely reason that triggered the incident.

The suspect -- Shivagnanasundaram Surendrajith -- a doctor and resident of Jaffna is alleged to have brutally stabbed Kathirgamathamby on Wednesday (19) afternoon at the university’s Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty. She is currently recovering at the National Hospital while the suspect, who is assumed to have consumed a sedative soon after the attack, is recovering at the Kalubowila Teaching hospital. (LP)
