The United National Party (UNP) reformists yesterday decided to propose the name of former parliamentarian and senior UNPer  Bakeer Markar as the mayoral candidate at the elections to the Colombo Municipal Council, MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday.

He said the reformists had discussed their political strategies for changing the party leadership and added that the UNP could win the elections to the remaining 25 local councils if deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya was appointed party leader without further dilly dallying.

Yesterday’s meeting was attended by co-deputy leader Sajith Premadasa, MPs Thalata Atukorale, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Mr. Markar, provincial councillor Maithri Gunaratne and a few others. They were supposed to meet Mr. Jayasuriya last night. (KB)
