Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, in his ruling against notices issued on him and the members of the select committee by the Court of Appeal, made particular reference to views expressed by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in the course of his intervention on the legality of the matter.

The minister raised a question of privilege, 15 members across the political divide expressed their views on the matter.

The Speaker, in his ruling, said a broad consensus emerged in the course of the debate on the central issue requiring his decision.

“I like to make particular mention of the view, clearly expressed by the Leader of the Opposition in the course of his intervention that the purported notices constitute an unwarranted interference with the powers and procedures of Parliament, and are invalid.  This was stated with greater clarity by MP Joseph Michael Perera as well,” the Speaker said.
