Ravindu Vaas Gunawardena -- the son of former DIG Vaas Gunawardena -- was today taken into custody by the CID from a safe house in Pepilyana. He is being held under detention orders for 72 hours.

He was arrested in connection with the killing of businessman Shyam Huzamdeen.

During investigations based on statements provided by the suspects, it was revealed that when Shyam was brought to the former DIG’s residence in Nedimala, Ravindu and another policeman had got into a double cab with weapons and followed the van in which the victim was being transported.

On a previous occasion a separate warrant was issued for his arrest by the Kaduwela Magistrate in connection with the abduction and assault of Malabe SLIIT student Nipuna Ramanayake.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate had also issued an order banning Ravindu from leaving the country.

Following the arrest of former DIG Vaas Gunawardene the CID visited his Nedimala residence on two occasions and had also visited the home of Ravindu’s girlfriend.

In the raid carried out by the detectives they were also able to arrest another person who had an arrest warrant issued by a district court.
The suspect is being questioned by detectives led by CID ASP Shani Abeysekara.
