Ravi Wettasinghe arrested

Controversial businessman Ravi Wettasinghe who had been on an open warrant was arrested by Immigration officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport this evening whilst attempting to leave the country for Dubai.

Mr. Wettasinghe who had arrived at the airport around 5.00 pm was prevented from leaving the country as his name was in the ‘Immigration Stop List’, Immigration sources said.

He was then handed over to the Katunayake Police and is to be produced in the Negombo Magistrates Courts today, SP Negombo Division J K S H Liyanage said.

Ravi Wettasinghe became the Chairman of Wesco, after he bought over the CTB’s Werahera Central Workshop for Rs. 25 million in 1993.

The controversial entrepreneur fled the country amidst certain financial crisis within the bus company leaving the government to pay Rs.460 million as salaries for the employees.

An open warrant had been issued by the Bandarawela Magistrate Courts for the arrest of Mr. Wettasinghe over several pending cases.(Kevin Kariyawasam)
