Several families in the Ratnapura town and surrounding areas were evacuated today by the District Disaster Management Centre to avoid any possible disaster by floods, the operations manager of the Disaster Management Centre Colonel Priyankara Abeyratne said. This decision was taken earlier today when the Kaluganga river swelled due to the torrential rains experienced in the area.

The Kaluganga River had risen up to 18.5 m due to the high rainfall experienced in the Sri Pada range. Several roads were under water signaling a minor flood threat. A senior official of the Disaster Management Centre said the situation would worsen if the rains continued.
