Ranil seeks urgent meeting with MR

Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today sought an urgent meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss four issues that he said should be resolved before elections are held to the Northern Provincial Council.

To repeal the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and reactivate the 17th Amendment instead and the setting up of independent commissions

To include an additional provision to further strengthen the police commission in line with the LLRC recommendations. He had reminded President Rajapaksa that the LLRC had recommended the strengthening of the police commission to ensure that all police officers act independently and maintains a high degree of professional conduct.

Thereplacement of the Northern Governor with a civilian instead of a military officer.

Get a team of monitors from the commonwealth to monitor the Northern Provincial Councilelections.
Mr. Wickremesinghe urged the government to implement the UNHRC resolution of March 21 and that Sri Lanka would be commended for holding the elections in a freeand fair manner.
He said holding of free and fair elections would be an implementation of the Article 25 of the International Convention of Civil and Political Rights.
This letter was sent to President Rajapaksa on Wednesday but UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayeke said Mr. Wickremesinghe was yet to receive a response from the President. (YP)
