Ranil, opposition talks

13 July 2010 06:18 am

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is to hold talks with opposition political parties represented in Parliament on changing the constitution and replacing the Executive Presidency with an Executive Prime Minister responsible to the legislature.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake addressing a press conference today said that the objective of the discussion would be to build a common stand on the constitutional amendments.

Meanwhile the JVP claimed that the government is not genuine at all in its negotiations with the UNP to bring about constitutional changes at this juncture.

Addressing a press conference, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that the UNP leadership appears to have fallen into the trap laid by the government. Mr. Silva said that the government initiated this dialogue with the main opposition only as a measure to overcome public outcry against the proposals for arbitrary constitutional changes. (YP&KB)
