UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said the introduction of the Z-score system is the main cause for the present debacle in the education sector.

“The reason for this mess is the Z- score system and if not for the introduction of this system there will be no such crisis in the education sector. We have to see why this was introduced in the first place and abolish it if there is such a possibility,” he said.

At a meeting at the Mayor’s residence with students who were affected by the recent fiasco he said it was the government, which had to be blamed for the plight of the students. The meeting was attended by UNP parliamentarian and Youth Wing Chairman Ruwan Wijewardena and Kurunegala District MP Akila Kariyawasam.

“The Rajapaksa government has clearly done to education what Kalinga Maga did to raja rata, they have completely ruined the whole system and it’s in tatters now,” he said.

Mr. Wijeywardena said the students had faced many hardships due to the shortsightedness of the officials.

“Many students have toiled hard to study with the hope of entering university, but all their hopes and dreams have been dashed because of this muddle. We urge all those responsible to ensure that no student is penalized for the fault of others,”

The Leader of the Opposition assured students present that the UNP would take all possible steps to ensure that no student faces injustice.( By Yohan Perera and Hafeel Farisz)
